The Atlantic Hockey Federation celebrates off-ice success as much as on-ice. The Long Island Rebels Squirt Minor team took part in giving back to their local community last month.
On Saturday, September 17, 2022, the Long Island Rebels team partnered up with the StonyBrook University Men’s hockey team to volunteer at the League of Yes Foundation. The League of Yes Foundation provides opportunities for children with physical and/or mental disabilities to experience the excitement of playing baseball. Their goal is to help players develop social skills and increase self-esteem while promoting community support.
The Long Island players teamed up with the League of Yes participants to help them bat, play the field and run the bases with enthusiasm. The Rebels cheered the participants on by providing a “Tunnel of Love” to run through down the third baseline.
Not only was this a team bonding experience; it allowed the young players to interact with others while teaching them the importance of community service. As a previous StonyBrook player, Rebels Coach, Michael Cartwright participated in this program and found it to be a rewarding experience. “I wanted my players to get the same amount of joy I had when I participated in the League of Yes,” said Coach Cartwright.
Overall, the team enjoyed this opportunity and hopes to continue participating in similar events this season.
