P.A.L. Ice Hockey and Long Island Whalers are excited to announce a merger that will begin with the 2024-2025 hockey season. This union will mark a significant milestone in Long Island’s hockey landscape. P.A.L. Ice Hockey and Long Island Whalers hockey programs will merge at the Tier I and Tier II levels under P.A.L. Ice Hockey. The objective of the new model is to offer current members of both organizations the opportunity for consolidation within our region to improve the consistency of the level of play within each age group and skill level. The partnership will provide players on Long Island four distinctive advantages: 1) Professional and dedicated coaching staff; 2) Increased access to ice time and off-ice facilities; 3) Competitive teams at all levels; and 4) Increased focus on development for every tier. For incoming Whalers players as well as current P.A.L. families, the P.A.L. Ice Hockey model will provide all players and teams with a competitive and balanced schedule through their participation in the Tier 1 Hockey Federation and Atlantic Hockey Federation. The increased professional hockey staff, as well as an additional player pool will provide families with a focus on skill development and hockey IQ while ensuring players are placed in the best possible situation to allow for maximum development and individual and team success. This merger will give players a clear pathway through youth hockey at various levels of play from the Learn to Play Programs to the Tier I P.A.L. Jr Islander program. P.A.L. and Whalers will now be able to offer multiple levels and options for players of all skill levels with movement opportunities as they grow and develop as hockey players. P.A.L.’s staff will work hard to identify players and make recommendations to Black Bear Sports Group’s affiliated Junior hockey teams (pre-college), P.A.L. Jr Islanders (NCDC), Maryland Black Bears (NAHL) and Youngstown Phantoms (USHL).
The goal of the new model will be developing homegrown players out of Long Island and advance players from Mites to the many Junior programs under P.A.L. and our affiliates, all the while maintaining its history, integrity, values, and dedicated hard work from both organizations. This consolidation will not displace any families from either organization, but it will provide more opportunity, development, greater support and expand the pathway for all our families. The relationship between both organizations has always been strong, and we are all looking forward to building on that platform and strengthening hockey on Long Island.

I am excited to have the opportunity to work with all the resources that are available through both Black Bear and P.A.L.” stated Rob Hare, the appointed Youth Hockey director. “Our collective goal is to not only elevate the program’s quality but also expand access for aspiring young athletes passionate about hockey.”
FAQ:
- Are any current teams being displaced? That is a good question to ask, and the answer is no. There will be a place for every current family in both organizations and in fact we will be growing the number of teams in all age groups allowing for more local players to participate.
- Which rink will teams play out of? All team will be playing out of Northwell Health Ice Center,
The Rinx, The Hub or Iceworks. Geographical locations of players will be kept in mind while
making the practice schedule, and game ice will be available at all locations.

- Mason played a complete game this weekend. Playing center he showed his teammates what it takes to play a 200 foot game. His back checking and pursuit of the puck was excellent and he kept his cool when under pressure.

- Santino is an offensive powerhouse, but it’s his back checking, shot blocking, and support in our own zone that makes him our player of the week submission. Santino blocked over ten shots in two games. On Sunday, he dove and blocked a sure goal that was then carried up ice for a crucial goal for our team. Santino does whatever it takes to win.

- Sometimes the Player of the Week isn’t about the amount of points one achieves, but the impact one can have on their teammates. With his team down 4-0 going into the 3rd period, Paulie fired up his teammates with a speech right out of a Rocky movie. It was amazing to see the team’s eyes light up and hit the ice with passion after the break. The Hurricanes went on to score the next 6 goals and secure the win 6-4. That win put them in the tournament championship game. Sometimes all it takes is one voice to create big change.

Chris is the kind of player coaches love – quite, respectful, hardworking, focused, and always a go-to option whatever the need.”

In a significant stride towards fostering inclusivity in youth hockey, the Black Bear Youth Hockey Foundation proudly announces its scholarship recipients for the 2023-24 season, providing a total of $44,900 in financial aid to 64 deserving children. Established in 2020, the foundation aims to eliminate financial barriers hindering youth hockey participation, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to experience the camaraderie and life lessons that the sport offers. Through individual grants and sponsored programs, the foundation strives to ease the financial stress many families face in affording equipment and ice time. Youth hockey, known for cultivating friendships, teamwork, and accountability, becomes an accessible avenue for all, nurturing a lifelong passion for the sport.
Stories of Triumph and Dedication:
Michael Edelstein: A dedicated player on the Grundy Senators 12U hockey team, Michael Edelstein’s journey into hockey began at the age of three. Despite financial challenges, Michael’s single mom supports his passion, and the Black Bear Hockey Foundation scholarship serves as a crucial support, enabling him to continue thriving on the ice.
The Turpin Family: June, James, and Jackson Turpin of the Maryland Jr. Black Bears express their deep gratitude as recipients of the Black Bear Hockey Foundation scholarship. Despite facing financial strains due to their dad’s surgery, the scholarship has allowed them to persist in their love for hockey.
Noah Krasner: A devoted player for the Igloo Jaguars since the age of five, Noah Krasner considers hockey more than just a game—it’s his life. The scholarship, received last year, proved transformative as Noah moved to the 16u level, enhancing both his skills and maturity. Noah’s unwavering work ethic and commitment make him a deserving candidate for ongoing support.
Paulina Rucz: Overcoming the challenges of a rare heart defect, Paulina Rucz, a resilient player on the 16U Elite Islanders Girls team, has defied the odds. The scholarship, received last year, eased financial strain for her mother amid layoffs. Paulina’s remarkable achievements, including MVP and Top Scorer, reflect her dedication, and she looks forward to the continued support of the scholarship in pursuing her dreams in the National Women’s Hockey League.

Here are your Atlantic Hockey Federation Players of the Week and Peak Performer ending November 12th, 2023. This weekly feature, running throughout the 2023-24 season, pays tribute to outstanding players across all divisions. Our honorees are selected from player nominations submitted by their respective coaches. You can now commemorate their achievements with customizable Player of the Week merchandise available in the league store.

9U AA Division: Nominating Coach: Chris Harrington
- Team: Delaware Ducks
- Player’s Name: Landon Milby
- Jersey Number: 85
- Position: Defense
- Landon netted a natural hat trick in game 1 this weekend along with 1 assist to contribute to a full team win. Landon leads by example with his hustle and grit which he demonstrates every shift. Landon is very coachable and quickly incorporates feedback into his game. Keep up the hard work Landon!
10U AA Division: Nominating Coach: Anthony Gifoli

- Jersey Number: 97
- Position: Forward
- William made his return this weekend after a week out with an injury. He returned to his normal form quickly being a team player, pursuing loose pucks and being an excellent passer. William was also great in his defensive zone being an integral part of our breakout and defensive zone assignments. He finished the weekend with 6 points (2 goals and 4 assists) and in his view the most important stat 2 teams wins.
10U Lemieux Division: Nominating Coach: Bryan Shrouds

- Jersey Number: 23
- Position: Goalie
- Jayden played a great game Saturday against a high powered AHF team, holding them to half their usual goals per game. He made key saves and was able to control rebounds to give his team the opportunity to regroup. He followed up his clutch performance on Sunday (non-league game) giving up only 1 goal on 31 shots! Way to go Jayden!!
10U McDavid Division: Nominating Coach: Mark Jenkins

- Player’s Name: Andrew Conlon

- Position: Forward
- Andrew had an outstanding weekend helping his team to 2 wins. First were 2 assist in a 7-0 win over Valley Forge followed up by a stellar performance on Sunday against Team Philadelphia where he notched an assist and 2 goals including a thrilling OT winner. Andrew was instrumental in helping his team come back from a 2 goal deficit to start the 3rd period with his great defensive play, dominance in the face off circle and clutch goal scoring.
11U AA Division: Nominating Coach: Joseph Rizzo

- Oliver has been a leader in our group all season. His hustle, hockey IQ and scoring touch has helped our team’s success week after week. Proud of Ollie!
12U AA Division: Nominating Coach: Jonathan Jones

- Position: Forward
- Austin scored 5 goals and added an assist in two very big games for his team. He played offense and some defense, and just competed his heart out. Great effort Austin!
12U Lemieux Division: Nominating Coach: John C. Snyder

- Blake stepped up as our team was short-handed this weekend. Skated as one of two centers, really got into the games and gave it his all. Cognizant of where to be and how to set up plays in order to get us and keep us on the scoreboard.
12U McDavid Division: Nominating Coach: Jason Bracco

- Player’s Name: Luca Shoaf Kozak
- Jersey Number: 18
- Position: Center
- Luca powered her line and the Chiefs Red team with two outstanding performances tallying 5 goals and an assist in AHF league play this weekend. Over both games, she led her linemates who collectively notched 9 out of a total 11 goals scored in both team wins against two very tough opponents in the NJ Colts and Jersey Shore Wildcats. In her first season with the Chiefs, she has fit right in with her team mates and organization. The Chiefs are excited to see what the rest of the season holds in store for Luca.
13U AA Division: Nominating Coach: Mark Krull

- Bray had a big weekend helping our team to 3 wins with key goals and timely assists including setting up the game winner at the end of OT. Great job Bray!
14U AA Division: Nominating Coach: John Fields

- Player’s Name: Cole Hellman
- Jersey Number: 63
- Position: Defense
- Cole made the move defense this week and played tremendously. He kept his opponents to the outside all game, won races to the puck in his corners, played physically and moved the puck with intelligence and purpose. It was his best game of the year.
14U Lemieux Division: Nominating Coach: Anthony Minerva

- Andrew had a great and and furthermore a couple fantastic goals! I have been telling the boys to bear down, be stronger on their sticks and shoot HARD. Andrew had snipe where he ripped it from the top of the circle and went bar down! Great job of being strong and leaning into your shot. Keep up the good buddy!

- Brendan scored the GWG and had 2 goals in his 1st game. 2nd game he was a solid 2-way player and had an assist. He has been our most consistent forward all year.

- Mackey was a wall in a tight 1-0 game against the Igloo Jags this past weekend, stopping all 47 shots faced in what was his best game of the season! Mackey sports a 2.22 GAA and .914 Save % on the season.

- Ian had an outstanding weekend. He played a huge part in our win Saturday, and an even bigger part in our tie Sunday. Ian kicked off the come back down 5-3 with his 2nd of the game to bring us within 1. He then helped tie the game 6-6 late on the Power Play, earning his spot as our teams player of the week.
